About the event

Why We Read: Using Fiction to Make Sense of the World

Why do stories matter? In this lively presentation and discussion, the Rev. Paula Morton explores how fiction helps us understand ourselves, other people, and the world we live in. Drawing on examples from classic and contemporary literature, the session examines reading not just as entertainment, but as a way of exploring meaning, empathy, morality, and human experience.

Paula Morton is Rector Emeritus of Transfiguration Episcopal Church in Saluda and a retired Navy Chaplain. She enjoys container gardening, writing speculative fiction, and reading a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction.
